NIGHTSHADE FEAR
If you’ve heard that nightshade vegetables aggravate conditions such as arthritis,you can let go of this misconception. Potatoes,tomatoes,peppers,and eggplants,when ripe,have no negative effect on health. It’s the opposite: These amazing foods enhance health with their nutrients and healing properties. They’re exactly what you need when you’re dealing with illness.
Modern-day nightshade fear is just a historical misunderstanding that’s changed shape over the years. First,people were afraid of nightshades because their leaves and stems are toxic when consumed. (If that were a legitimate conclusion,then you’d have to avoid all sorts of other foods,too,including oranges and peaches,because that foliage will also make you sick if you eat it.)Once people caught on that the fruits (or tubers,in the case of potatoes)themselves were fine,tomato fear crept up again,because people were eating them off of pewter plates,and the tomato acid released toxic lead that poisoned tomato eaters. Finally,with the days of pewter plates gone,tomatoes were embraced once more.
However,fears like these tend to linger in the collective awareness. So in our current day,as mystery chronic pain has taken hold of more and more people,nightshades are there in the consciousness to be blamed. The modern-day theory goes that these foods are high in alkaloids that cause inflammation. It’s not the alkaloids causing inflammation,though. It’s not the foods that grow on nightshade plants that are the problem.
We have to look at the other ingredients served with these foods. In the case of ketchup and tomato sauce,there’s often high-fructose corn syrup,and where there’s tomato,you’ll frequently find a wheat crust or slice of sandwich bread. With eggplant,there’s the inevitable parmesan. Bell peppers get stuffed with sausage and Monterey Jack. Potatoes are so often deep-fat-fried or twice-baked and encrusted with bacon bits. Corn,wheat,high dairy fat,and frying are the real triggers to illness in these situations,because they feed pathogens. When people feel better by cutting out nightshades from their diets,it’s because they’ve lowered their intake of these other ingredients.
Nightshades would have an entirely different reputation if the popular dishes were baked potatoes heaped with salsa and avocado,steamed eggplant drizzled with olive oil and lemon juice,red bell pepper sticks with hummus,and tomatoes stuffed with sundried tomato-tahini dip. If these were the norm,no one would have made a link between nightshades and inflammation,because there’s no link to be found when unproductive foods aren’t in the mix.
In the rare case where someone eats a juicy,ripe tomato on its own,or a plain steamed potato,and experiences the onset of symptoms,it’s practically guaranteed that she or he has symptoms when eating other types of healthy fruits and vegetables,too. It’s a sign that the person is dealing with an elevated pathogenic load—the fruits and vegetables are causing a detox reaction. Potato is an incredible antiviral,very high in the amino acid lysine,so if someone is compromised by any sort of viral infection (whether they’re aware of its presence or not),she or he is likely to feel an effect in the body as the virus dies off. And tomato skins actually kill off unproductive bacteria,fungus,worms,and other parasites—so as they’re eliminated from the intestinal tract,it can lead to detox symptoms,it’s a classic case of Holy Four foods getting blamed when they’re actually helping us all.
None of this is to say that you should go eating those dark nightshade berries in the woods—those are poisonous. Stick to known human food. Also make sure that what you’re eating is fully ripe. Most green bell peppers that you’ll see on the grocery store shelf are just unripe versions of the red bell peppers nearby. Opt for the red ones,because a green pepper or tomato (unless it’s a variety that’s green when ripe)is still in the nightshade realm and can be an irritant. (Anything at such an unripe stage can be irritating.) Once ripe,the fruit itself is no longer actually a nightshade.
