PREBIOTICS
The concept of prebiotics has taken off lately. This is one fad that’s not harmful in any way;I just want you to understand what it really means. The term prebiotics refers to those foods that feed productive bacteria and other beneficial microorganisms in the gut. There’s a lot of material out there that talks about which fruits and vegetables are prebiotics,and prebiotic supplements are on the market,too.
What isn’t understood is that every single fruit and vegetable in its raw state (at least,each one that can be eaten raw)is a prebiotic. Even some steamed vegetables can be prebiotics. So rather than getting wrapped up in the hype and worrying about yet one more nutritional to-do,all you have to worry about is keeping enough of the Holy Four foods in your diet,and making sure you eat some of them raw or steamed.
OIL PULLING
The concept of oil pulling—that is,swishing oil in your mouth for a prolonged period in order to draw toxins out of your body—is not a harmful trend so much as it’s a waste of time. I’m sorry to report that oil pulling does not,in fact,pull out toxins,and the act of swishing is not enough for the oil to kill bacteria in your mouth. You can now have those 20 minutes a day of your life back.
To make a real difference in your oral health,put some coconut oil on your toothbrush and brush it into your teeth and gums (after you’ve brushed with toothpaste and rinsed). It takes this brushing action,rather than swishing,to make an impact. Use only coconut oil—no other oil will do. The compounds in coconut have powerful antibacterial,antiviral,and antifungal properties to help keep gum disease at bay.
