GOITROGENIC FOODS
Cruciferous vegetables such as kale,cauliflower,broccoli,cabbage,and more have gotten a bad name lately. So have other completely innocent foods such as peaches,pears,strawberries,and spinach. Don’t believe the hype that these foods that contain so-called goitrogens are harmful to the thyroid. The concept of goitrogens—that is,goiter-causing compounds—has been blown way out of proportion. In the first place,none of these foods contain enough goitrogens to even be a health concern. Secondly,the goitrogens in these foods are bonded to phytochemicals and amino acids that stop the goitrogens from doing harm. Even if you were to eat 100 pounds of broccoli in a day (which is humanly impossible),the goitrogens wouldn’t be a concern.
What is a problem is if you avoid these foods. You will be doing your thyroid a major disservice,because they contain some of the nutrients that your thyroid gland needs most,including the bioactive trace mineral iodine. For someone with a goiter,these are the exact foods that will help that goiter heal. For someone with thyroid nodules or tumors,these are the foods with properties to fight them. Medical science does not yet“have a full picture of what sort of nutrition the thyroid truly needs to thrive,and so a huge group of foods get wiped out of people’s diets out of fear of one compound that has yet to be fully studied. Until medicine understands the multiple trace minerals,vitamins,phytochemicals,and other nutrients that the thyroid needs—which are all abundant in goitrogenic foods—goitrogens will continue to be misunderstood. Don’t be one of the people who follows this trend and misses out on the opportunity for health.
